まるがお生活

日常を綴ります。1年半の産休・育休から2017年5月に職場復帰しました。その後、2018年12月より再び産休・育休へ。→2019年1月、第2子出産。

突然ですが英語のエッセイ ~Epidural birth~

Epidural birth

I gave birth to my second baby on 11th January. This time, I opted for epidural birth, although I did for natural birth when I delivered my first child. Originally, I was interested in epidural birth, but I wanted to deliver naturally when I gave birth first. It was very hard. My son didn’t come one week after due date, so I was hospitalized and got labor-inducing drug. I could give birth to him safely, but I got episiotomy and in addition, my birth canal tore because my son’s head was big. I was very happy but I was suffering from the muscle pain and perineorrhaphy for more than one month. It was very difficult just to walk and sit down. I got sad because I had to take care of my baby, feeling such a pain. This time, there is already my son and we have to take care of him and new baby. So, I want to recover early. In addition, I can know the schedule of the birth date, so I can easily imagine how my son spends the day and I feel calm. Some friends experienced epidural birth and they recommended it. They said that they could feel baby’s moving during their delivery and recovery after delivery was earlier. I wanted to experience epidural birth, so I selected it.

My due date was originally 11th January, but my doctor planed to deliver one week earlier than the day. However, my baby still didn’t prepare two days before new due date, so it was rescheduled to 11th January. On that day, I got hospitalized in the morning and I started to get an epidural at about 9:00 a.m. I didn’t feel pain and I could talk with my husband during my contraction. I could even watch TV and Amazon video about one hour before my delivery. However, I had to change my posture many times because my baby’s heart beats got weaken many times, and I felt discomfortable even though I didn’t feel pain. I knew that it was very hard even when I selected painless delivery. Finally, my daughter was born at 2:30 p.m. and she cried quickly, and I got relieved. The moment that a new baby is born is always wonderful. Her head was also big, so finally my birth canal tore again. This time, I walked a lot and did yoga and other things that I had heard it was good for easy delivery, but it was hard.

I searched for risks and benefits of epidural delivery in advance. I had heard that higher percent of women in other countries selected epidural delivery than in Japan. In 2016, there was only 6% of pregnant women selected painless delivery in Japan. Now, the percentage of pregnant women who select painless delivery gets higher, but there are still negative opinions; for example, “Epidural delivery is dangerous.” or “Delivery with strong pain is wonderful and makes us feel more love to our babies.” In fact, many pregnant women are interested in painless delivery, but much of them select natural delivery. The reason is that some of them think that it is bad to select painless delivery or they feel anxious about risks because Japanese media show medical accidents of painless delivery and highly emphasizes the risks. In France and America, more than 50% of pregnant women select epidural delivery but these days, more women select natural delivery, and in other countries, more than 50% of pregnant women select natural delivery. Actually, there are many risks when we select epidural delivery, but I hope that all pregnant women can select the way of delivery they want. To do so, I’d like to know more correct information.

Now, I started new life with my new baby. She grows well and we are all happy even though my son sometimes behaves like a baby. Like I heard, my recovery was earlier than last delivery. It encourages me.
